Italian emigration in Paraguay: a small yet noteworthy presence The aim of the present essay is to reconstruct the main characteristics of the Italian emigration in Paraguay - a topic not very treated in literature. We are taking in consideration flows that not are particularly important in absolute terms – especially if compared with those of other Latin American countries, but they demonstrate the determinant contribution of our emigrants in the phase of the reconstruction after the war of 1864-1870, and in the following period of development and progress of the Country. Since the Italian sources referring just to the specific country are not available, the ones used here come predominantly from the Headquarter of Immigration, which dealt with the survey of the migratory phenomenon and was instituted in Paraguay in the second half of the 19th century. The outline demonstrates the great contribution given by Italian people (engineers and workers, businessmen and personnel, peasants and ranchers) owing technical skills and strong will. The modern Paraguayan society attests the indelible imprint left by our emigrants, since a noticeable portion of the actual population seems to have Italian origins.
