Using the notion of bounded variation for functions of several variables, some conditions have been found, in order to ensure that a planar transformation T admits an invariant measure with density. The structure of the invariant measure is described, and also uniqueness results have been obtained. Previous one-dimensional results of different Authors are partially extended.
