In this review the main Italian protection events, trends new perspectives and changes, which characterized and conditioned plant diseases control during the twentieth century are presented. Attention is focused on old and new classes of fungicides, advances in chemical formulations as well as in their resistance risk, together toxicological and environmental aspects. An account is given on the organization and recent changes of the Italian Phytosanitary Service. Finally, development perspectives of integrated and biological control and the effects to harmonize, within the European Union, all plant protection measures are briefly reported.
