Maps are the more effective method to represent environmental noise. Noise mapping permit to indicate clearly several aspects of the environmental noise: acoustic pollution state, noise limits, breaches of limit values, the acoustic zones, the number of people affected in a certain area. The recent Italian and European legislation in the field of acoustic pollution impose the realization of maps. Data about environmental noise levels should therefore be collected, collated or reported in accordance with comparable criteria among the UE member states. This fact implies the use of harmonised indicators and evaluation methods, as well as criteria for the alignment of noise mapping. Such criteria and methods are established by the Community. The recent European Directive 2002/49/EC (06.25.2002) imposes that each member states shall apply the noise indicators Lden and Lnight for the preparation and revision of strategic noise mapping. Each member state must adjust its norms to the new indicators. For example, italian legislature does not concept Levening and so Lden indicator. In the paper, Italian and European legislation with particular reference to the noise mapping are compared and some examples are reported.
