This research activity deals with the theoretical implementation and development of a software platform, based on open source programming, for designing and optimizing gears. A design platform based on an open source software gives the following advantages: zero management costs and software deployment, software portability through different operating systems (e.g. Windows/Linux/Mac), rapid development of new modules based on specific research requirements and easy integration with other languages (C + +, Visual Basic,...) .. In this paper the main components of the application will be presented, focussing also on the developed “gear graphic design module” written by the author using Python routines and the Qt graphical interface.
