Research has been conducted to characterize two species of the Helianthus genus from the phytochemical and ecophysiological viewpoint. In particular the data concerning the photosynthetic parameters (photosynthetic activity and pigments) in Helianthus annuus L. as regards Helianthus argophyllus Torr. & A.Gray consider how the response of the “silverleaf sunflower” in extreme temperatures and light is superior compared to the cultivated sunflower. Potentially the H. argophyllus can transfer its resistance characteristics to excessive light and heat to the H. annuus, thus enabling the latter to withstand the sudden changes of temperatures and light present subtropical environments. However production targets remain unsatisfactory.
