A brief summary of the Direct Displacement Based Design (DDBD) method is presented, with some discussion of the appropriate seismic design input to be used and on the applicability to retaining structures. A review of the advancements to account for nonlinear soil-structure interaction in the DDBD is provided, with reference to shallow foundations.
