A simple conceptual model was used to classify basins in a concise manner. The model, comprising two tanks, computes the mean monthly streamflow from the mean monthly rainfalls and temperatures in an average year. The first tank represents soil and vegetation and governs the rainfall-evapotranspiration relationship according to the Thornthwaite-Mather method. The second reservoir, fed by the first, is linear and is defined by a single parameter, 01 and controls the monthly yield of the available water. Application of the model to nine basins indicates that 1 is strongly linked to the overall permeabilities of the rock formations outcropping in the area, and is rather independent of the catchment size. For high permeability basins the value of ,B is around 0.5, and for low permeability it is around 0.1 or less.
