We review the argument that there is a quantum phase transition in the expectation value of the Polyakov loop operator in a large representation of the gauge group. The transition occurs as the size of the representation is increased. Our analysis applies to the ’t Hooft limit of four dimensional Yang-Mills theory with adjoint or other center neutral matter fields, including the case of N = 4 Yang-Mills theory on a spatial S^3. We speculate that this transition is reflected in the D-branes which are the string theory duals of giant loops.

Abstract

We review the argument that there is a quantum phase transition in the expectation value of the Polyakov loop operator in a large representation of the gauge group. The transition occurs as the size of the representation is increased. Our analysis applies to the ’t Hooft limit of four dimensional Yang-Mills theory with adjoint or other center neutral matter fields, including the case of N = 4 Yang-Mills theory on a spatial S^3. We speculate that this transition is reflected in the D-branes which are the string theory duals of giant loops.
