This paper studies the diffusion of Italian wine in Argentina during the first globalization of contemporary economy. In the context of the internationalization of the wine industry, from the eighties of the nineteenth century Argentina became for the Italian producers one of the main sales markets. The financial crisis of 1890 was a selection. The producers who knew how to innovate and adapt won positions. The study of Italian wine imports in Argentina indicates that international trade encouraged the formation of a more modern business organization, favoring the creation of networks of representatives and companies specialized in international trade. Another important aspect of globalization is the circulation of information and commercial data. The growth of the Italian wine industry was also achieved thanks to the participation of the state. This is the case of the Italian wine station in Buenos Aires that began operating in 1888. The station had the objective of promoting exports and for this purpose it offered producers and authorities information on the characteristics and evolution of the Argentine market. The paper proves that the Argentine market played a fundamental role in the process of modernization and growth of the Italian wine industry and that the performance of the state was key because it gave the wine companies a solid institutional base. All this stimulated exports.
