The hospital and the church of S. Croce in Perugia, now called S. Giuseppe dei Falegnami (carpenters), were mentioned in a document dated 1145. They were considered property of the Order of Canons of the Holy Sepulchre (one of the more prestigious institutions of Christianity between XIII and XIV century, with priories in every part of Europe). After the fall of Acre (1291), abandoning the Holy Land, the Order established its Motherhouse in Perugia, at the site of S. Luca. This paper examines the figurative production connected with the Order in the XIV century, in particular a little cycle of frescoes here presented as a commission by the Archprior Bartolomeo di Ciutio degli Oddi (member of a noble family of Perugia). He moved the seat of the Archprior from S. Luca to S. Croce in 1360, renovated the house (event celebrated in a epigraph dated 1363), and commissioned the frescoes, for the space around the gate of the church, as also confirmed by the picture of San Bartolomeo in a preeminent position. The cycle is here assigned to Allegretto Nuzi, a painter from Fabriano, who completed his education in Siena and Florence in the 1340s. He had other relevant commissions in Perugia and can be considered one of the protagonists of art in the third quarter of the XIV century, in Umbria and the Marche.
