Lignocellulosic materials, as nanocrystalline cellulose, micro- and nano-fibrillated cellulose and bacterial cellulose nanofibers, have become fascinating structures to design new bio-based materials. Derived from the most abundant and renewable biopolymer, they are drawing an incredible level of attention. This growing interest is related to their important and useful physical and chemical properties. Their morphological and topographical likenesses allow the exploitation of lignocellulosic materials in the development of nanostructured composites targeting specific industrial sectors, such as, for example, the packaging field. In this chapter, lignocellulosic materials and, in particular, cellulosic materials, are highlighted as promising alternative additives in packaging applications. Special emphasis will be given to recent developments of cellulose-based nanocomposites, in particular cellulose nanocrystal-based systems, their processing, properties, and final practical applications. Furthermore, the most relevant processing aspects of nanocellulose-based polymeric formulations, such as the thermal stability and the nanofiller dispersion, are addressed. The chapter also summarizes some recent developments in bio-based and biodegradable nanocellulose-based polymeric systems for the packaging sector with an emphasis on the nanocomposite properties with interest in the sustainable food packaging field.
