Abstract - Italiano. Abstract - English. The time the essay is concerned with is what has been called the “Scottish Renaissance” as synthesized by the excellent poet and translator Gavin Douglas. His cultural background seems to suggest a profound personal involvement in the identity of Scotland as a nation and as a centre of literary production. Douglas's literary career, though short – it occupied the years between 1501 (the date of "The Palice of Honour") and 1513 (when the translation of the "Aeneid", the first full-length translation of a classical work in Britain, was completed) – is marked by a strong awareness of the important role Scottish poetry had acquired.
