In the present paper, the problems connected with the archiviation of geodetic data (such as coordinates, haights, benchmark construction details, images, ...) are examined, referring to the relational database archiving model. A special attention is given to the connection of the geodetic database to a GIS support. Some general characteristics and objectives which have to be reached by a well designed geodetic database are presented. Then, the different phases in planning and organizing such an archive are discussed. Finally, as an example, the geodetic database realized by Perugia University for the Cartographic Service of the italian Region Umbria is presented.
