Thymic atrophy in meat pigeons. Gross and microscopic changes, observed in 28-30 day old pigeon during a survey in a slaughterhouse in the Centre of Italy, are described. The main feature was a severe atrophy of the thymus. In several cases it was difficult to find it. Histological study of the thymus showed the presence of lymphoid depletion and necrosis. Ultramicroscopy findings revealed severe changes in the thymic lymphocytes, both the cytoplasm (swelling and vacuolar alteration of mitochondria) and the nucleus (breakage of the nuclear membrane, picnosis, karyolysis and karyorrhexis). Histological changes of the bursa of Fabricius were characterized by a variable atrophy of lymphoid follicles. At times cysts of different size were evident and the connective tissue stroma was increased.
