This symposium originates from a workshop of the Italian Association for Comparative Economic Studies (AISSEC) on ‘‘Comparing Inequalities’’, which was held in Assisi, Italy, in June 2010. The workshop was organized jointly with the University of Perugia, the European Association for Comparative Economic Studies (EACES), and the Italian Association of Labour Economists (AIEL). Of the 51 full papers received in response to the call for papers, 21 were accepted for presentation at the workshop after a review process carried out by an international scientific committee. Three papers published in this issue (Gruen and Klasen, Silber and Verme, Kecmanovic) were selected from those presented in the ‘‘Income inequality in transition’’ session. The fourth paper (by Lukiyanova and Oshchepkov), which was also selected by the Guest Editors, was submitted to the journal separately and included in this issue. The refereeing process, managed by the Guest Editors, has strictly followed the usual standards and procedures described in the journal’s editorial policy. The Guest Editors are grateful to the Managing Editor, Richard Frensch, for his assistance and for having provided us with the opportunity to edit this Symposium Issue.
