This paper describes an experimental bench for the non-intrusive analysis of fuel spray characteristics in a car injector. The bench has been developed by AEA for SIEMENS AUTOMOTIVE SPA in co-operation with SIEMENS researchers and the University of Perugia. This bench uses two different methodologies for spray visualization: the first based on the shadowgraphy technique through a stroboscopic lamp and the other uses the scattered light produced by the spray particles when hit by a laser sheet. The paper describes the fundamental characteristics of the measurement lines. The procedures of analysis, developed for the definition of the fuel spray geometric characteristics are also described, on the basis of the results obtained in the study of low and high pressure gasoline injectors.
