Abstract

A Diesel spray and combustion model has been connected with the KIVA code to simulate combustion phenomena in a Diesel Engine equipped with a common rail injection system. The paper provides an overview of the sub models used for mixture formation like liquid core atomization droplet secondary break up and high pressure evaporation model. Auto ignition and combustion are respectively described by a shell and characteristics time models. The combustion modeling predictions are compared to measurements. Finally a sensitivity analysis on grid spacing, time step, and number of fuel parcels injected is carried out.
