Abdominal ultrasound is generally used to evaluate the equine abdomen. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of peritoneal fluid is an important diagnostic tool. The aim of this study was to evaluate sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of ultrasound to detect peritoneal fluid using abdominocentesis as a gold standard. Seventy-five horses were enrolled in this study. Ultrasound was 87% sensitive and 63% specify to detect peritoneal fluid; positive and negative predictive values were 95% and 36%, respectively. Significant association was found between ultrasonographic findings (presence and quantity) and flowed peritoneal fluid. Abdominal ultrasound is a valid diagnostic technique to identify peritoneal fluid; however, peritoneal fluid can be obtained when ultrasonographic findings are negative. Ultrasound is useful to guide the procedure especially when the colon is distended by sand or ingesta lying against the ventral abdominal wall.
