The article presents the language policy during fascism in Italy through its public education laws and systems. The seemingly systematic character of language policy during the rwo decades of fascism in italy makes one wonder whether it can correctly be defined as a 'language policy'. However, through comparison of the processes of other language policies in the world on which sociolinguistic studies are available today, and on the basis of thorough-going research into and interpretation of first-hand sources from that era (reviews, newspapers, archive documents, laws and decrees, dictionaries) it can be shown how fascism folloed a precise language policy design.
