In Italy lucerne landraces are still common representing 70% of the seed market. By 2002 their market will not be allowed and valid material can be lost. Six landraces from Central Italy were evaluated by RAPD markers, using 60 plants per population and scoring 21 amplification products. Five out of six were sharing a large part of their genome, while Casalina showed a unique type of germplasm.
