Haldane tratta dei progressi e dei rischi della ricerca scientifica, mentre Bertrand Russell nel suo "Icarus or The Future of Science" sottolinea i pericoli presenti nel progresso della scienza. Nel romanzo, “Man’s World, pubblicato nel 1926, Charlotte Haldane racconta di un futuribile stato socialista, retto da scienziati, interrogandosi sulla validità di una civiltà che non si pone il problema delle conseguenze degli esperimenti scientifici sull’uomo.
