This chapter will highlight how sustainability, territory, well being, quality of life, of experience and of consumption are essential aspects in understanding slow tourism. The work examines existing academic work on slow tourism and from them proposes three alternative theoretical paradigms. These, in turn, offer a framework for future research on the subject. The three proposed paradigms are: a) experience – slow tourism and consumption; b) sustainability – slow tourism and territory; c) well-being – slow tourism and quality of life.

Abstract

This chapter will highlight how sustainability, territory, well being, quality of life, of experience and of consumption are essential aspects in understanding slow tourism. The work examines existing academic work on slow tourism and from them proposes three alternative theoretical paradigms. These, in turn, offer a framework for future research on the subject. The three proposed paradigms are: a) experience – slow tourism and consumption; b) sustainability – slow tourism and territory; c) well-being – slow tourism and quality of life.
