ABSTRACT Elias Canetti and Herta Müller both won the Nobel Prize for literature. In this particular case the use of German is not obvious, since they come from two different countries in Eastern Europe where the official language is another one. In the light of postcolonial studies, language becomes an important instrument of inclusion and/or exclusion of the margin towards the putative centre. In the works of these two authors it is interesting to follow the different representations of cuttings, amputations and wounds, as a symbolic projection of an identity perceived as incomplete. Therefore wounds embody a deep fear, often irrational; it is the fear of being deprived of those qualities which may allow inclusion. Wounds, however, should not be considered only as negative.
