The Umbrian landscape starts to acquire its current identity only at the beginning of the 20th century. In this period, through the implementation of policy and legislation, the new Italian state was particularly incisive in upgrading infrastructure, settlements, and bringing about substantial change in the territory, quickly leading to the reshaping of the landscape and a new image of reality. The discovery the “real Umbria”, less green or romantic than it had always been described, was due to the first photographic imagery at the turn of the century. The theme of the current research is the cataloguing, classification and interpretation of a large body of historic photographs (about 10,000 documents) originating from countless private archives. The material offers a wealth of information on the temporal structure of the landscape, and a narrative of the work of man in the construction of the place.
