This essay addresses the cultural, political and psychological impact that the Great War exerted on the modernist author Virginia Woolf both as an intellectual, an artist and a woman. In particular it focuses on the essay Three Guineas (1938) and Mrs Dalloway (1925) as two major examples of how a woman intellectual can actually be active against the tragedy of the war. Special attention is given to the treatment of Septimus Smith’s psychological crisis which is read against the context of Clarissa’s esprit vital. The Septimus and Clarissa opposing dyad, this essay contends, seems to echo that represented by the Spectre and the Emanation, which lies at the centre of the cosmogony the Romantic poet Wil- liam Blake created for his prophetic books.
