This essay sets out to analyse the commissioning of some major works by Pietro Perugino in the Marches, and in particular the Annunciation, the Durante Altarpiece and the Senigallia Altarpiece (the proposed original location for this painting is the demolished church of San Francesco, Fano). The role of Fra Antonio da Pinerolo, Bishop of Fano from 1482 to 1499, is emphasised. Perugino knew the Franciscan as the author of the iconographic programme for the early frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, where the other artists involved were Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli.
