Psychometric theory is a discipline based on formal logic and general mathematical and statistical methods, and concerned primarily, but not exclusively, with evaluating the attributes of measurement instruments employed in the psychological sciences. Psychometric theory is built on two main statistical branches, the classical test theory (CTT) and the item response theory (IRT). The present article proposes an overview of their essential logic, perspectives, and potentials.
