This volume offers a reflection on the contested notion of border(s) in the field of European modernism studies. The chapters that compose the collection provide an in-depth exploration of some of the many borders (physical, temporal, metaphorical, cultural, artistic, linguistic, etc.) that at the same time limit and expand the composite universe of European modernism. The result is a polyphony of voices and experiences, which perfectly encapsulates modernism’s intrinsic tendency to reject any attempt to reach a final, stable and self-reliant definition.

Abstract

This volume offers a reflection on the contested notion of border(s) in the field of European modernism studies. The chapters that compose the collection provide an in-depth exploration of some of the many borders (physical, temporal, metaphorical, cultural, artistic, linguistic, etc.) that at the same time limit and expand the composite universe of European modernism. The result is a polyphony of voices and experiences, which perfectly encapsulates modernism’s intrinsic tendency to reject any attempt to reach a final, stable and self-reliant definition.
