Citation of the Old Testament in the Multisyllabic Scroll. The Mnogoslozhnyi Scroll (or the Mnogoslozhnyi Epistle) – the Slavonic translation of the Greek Message of the Patriarchs to the Emperor Theophilus – contains more biblical quotations than in the available Greek editions. A fragment of the introductory part of the Mnogoslozhnyi Scroll, which differes from the Greek original and contains quotations from Psalm 44 and the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, is analyzes in the article. The author suggests that the Old Testament quotations, not used in the original, were added during the translation in order to emphasize and strengthen the images of the greatness of the tsar’s power. It is naturally that well known phrases from the Mnogoslozhnyi Scroll passed to the Message to the Ugra and to other texts that formed the Russian doctrine of the tsars’ power.
