This paper aims to show the role of University and professors in the development of the construction of consensus in the Middle Ages. I will analyse the relationship between the professors of the Studia and the political power in central-northern Italy. I will then address the adhesion of the University to the political models of the cities in which it was inserted, with some examples of contributions by individual teachers on the ideological and doctrinal level. The purpose is to understand whether it can be identified a pragmatic action of intellectuals, aimed at channelling, transforming and conveying concepts and models in order to increase consensus around certain political systems.
