The Joint International Meeting UMI-DMV, organized by Deutsche Mathematiker Vereinigung and by Unione Matematica Italiana, was the first Joint Meeting promoted by the two societies and took place at the University of Perugia from June 18th to June 22nd, 2007. The University of Perugia, which supported this Joint Meeting, is one of the oldest universities in Italy. Indeed in the year 2008, it celebrated the seventh-centenary of its foundation, having been officially established in 1308 by Pope Clemente V's (Quinto's) bull. The relationship of Perugia with the German community is particularly strong thanks to its twinning with Potsdam and T\"{u}bingen that has been promoting over the last 25 years the cultural exchanges between Perugia and these two towns. The Meeting was held with the purpose of enhancing and encouraging scientific collaboration between the German and Italian communities in all fields of mathematics. The Scientific Program, included in these UMI Proceedings, consisted in ten plenary talks of one hour and sixteen special sessions covering all the more advanced and present aspects of pure and applied mathematics.
