In discussing the way in which the First World War was represented in Italian cinema during the inter-war period, the following essay will especially focus on two films of the time, Mario Volpe’s Il grido dell’aquila and Giovacchino Forzano’s Camicia nera. Produced, respectively, in 1923 and 1932-33, they present a number of points in common, as for what regards, in particular, their depiction of the birth of the Fascist movement, but differ significantly in their portrayal of the war, and through their comparison, the essay aims to shed new light on the representation of the First World War in Fascist cinema.
