The best-known iconic image in the world is that of the human heart, but nobody knows why is so different from the real one. The purpose of this essay is to review the studies and results already produced on this subject and introduce the reader to the knowledge of the medieval Latin texts which reveal the shape of the heart, since its debut in the medical field till the first appearance in the literary field.
