Abstract

Economic development is associated with the increase of the demand, in terms of both volume and performance, of local and global transportation. Sustainable transportation originates from the attempt to decouple the increase of the demand for transportation from its negative environmental, social, and economic impacts. Progresses in this field highlight an intertwined evolution of, on the one hand, technical and nontechnical solutions and, on the other hand, sustainability metrics and principles. Coherently, sectoral policies have proven effective in fostering the correction of market imperfections and the internalization of environmental and social costs.
