This essay studies the phenomenon of anonymous denouncers, recruited in rotation by medieval city governments to cooperate with the public power in maintaining order and security. On the one hand, the municipal statutes, which regulated this phenomenon, testify to the extent to which medieval city society was pervaded by the ‘culture of accusation’; on the other hand, they offer an eloquent example of the model of ‘consociative justice’ that inspired its judicial system.
Questo saggio studia il fenomeno dei denunciatori anonimi, reclutati a rotazione dai governi delle città medievali perché cooperassero con il potere pubblico al mantenimento dell’ordine e della sicurezza. Gli statuti municipali, che disciplinavano questo fenomeno, da un lato testimoniano quanto la società cittadina medievale fosse pervasa dalla «cultura dell’accusa»; dall’altro lato, offrono un esempio eloquente del modello di «giustizia consociativa», a cui s’ispirava il suo sistema giudiziario.
