Pietro Carattoli (Perugia, 1703-1766) appears to have been substantially ignored by historiography and criticism. Yet the artistic career of Carattoli, the last (but probably the only) Umbrian quadraturist, is marked by some stages that serve to highlight his relevance and place him in the national scene. The founder of an illustrious family of Perugian artists, Carattoli was first a pupil of the Perugian architect Alessandro Baglioni and then he probably moved to Bologna, where he continued his training at the Galli da Bibiena school. The artistic skills he learned can be seen in Carattoli’s work after his return to Perugia, where he works as a skilful decorator, capable of creating marvellous painted architectures. The contribution aims to outline the person of Pietro Carattoli as an artist, scene painter and architect, to present a regimen of the Umbrian works as well as to study in more detail the profile of the Umbrian quadraturist, placing him in the reference context. The contribution also deals with the perspective restitution in one of Carattoli’s study drawings, in order to critically evaluate his knowledge of geometrical and representative abilities.
