Among the approximately eighty active monasteries and temples on nowadays Mount Wutai, a dozen identify themselves with the tradition of “Chinese lama” Nenghai 能海 (1886-1967), a master who stands out as one of the most significant personalities of the modern Sino-Tibetan Buddhism. In spreading Tibetan Buddhism inside China proper, Nenghai visited Wutaishan several times. He finally moved there at the beginning of the 1950s, spending the last years of his life in a monastery located near Qingliang bridge. The present study investigates Nenghai’s role in the developments of Buddhism on Wutaishan during the 20th century, as well as the legacy he created through his first and second generation disciples involved with the “Five Plateau Mountains”.
