This study explores the setting of normative rules and standardization of French orthography from the second half of the 18th century to the first decades of the 19th century. The relations among norms, variants and « bon usage » are discussed to observe to what extent the changes introduced by dictionaries, grammars and essays affect spelling. From this perspective, we argue that the letters of the French educated Lady Louise de Stolberg Gedern, countess of Albany (1752-1824), provide a deep insight into these issues. This essay first gives an overview of the theoretical debates conducted about orthography at a time when the standardization of the spelling system was being energetically pursued. Then, after introducing the letters of the countess of Albany and her remarks on orthography, her spelling variants are discussed. Finally, we reflect on the results of our analysis and suggest some avenues for further inquiry.
