The general objective of the work is to study the relationship between multifunctional agriculture and local food policy deepening the degree of involvement of local communities. To achieve this goal, a pilot investigation has been launched through a questionnaire with a dual purpose was given to some Umbrian municipalities - key subjects for the activation of food policies and mediators with local communities for the social and economic development of their territory - to assess to what extent the municipal policies are redirecting local food production and consumption processes according to more sustainable paradigms; if and how local communities were activated. The first purpose starts from the consideration that the change in the lifestyles of citizens and the new perspectives of rural development in a multi-functional way, open up innovative spaces of integration between urban and rural contexts. The second refers to the definition of Community Engagement as an elaborate and acted work process in synergy with groups of people affiliated with particular interests, to address issues concerning the well-being of the community. The questionnaire was developed by comparing 3 documents that in different areas address, or will direct, the sustainable growth of urban and rural areas, guaranteeing the well-being of the community as much as possible, such as: the production, processing, distribution, purchase of food and its recovery: 1) the twelve themes of the European urban agenda (AUE), Amsterdam 2016; 2) the 9 points of the CAP 2021-2027 proposal; 3) the ten issues of the Milan Food Policy, March 2015. 10 areas of interest for the community engagement were identified in a context of multi-functionality in agriculture and 45 actions. The analysis of the data highlights the strategies implemented and to be implemented, in synergy with the territorial actors, as well as successful models for rural development in a multi-functional way and good practices in involving the communities.
