The work of Turgut Cansever is illustrative of an approach that considers the Turkish city, in particular Istanbul, as a reference, interpreted as a set of historical layers. According to Cansever, as the Ottoman city has developed not imposing itself on the Byzantine one, rather establishing new relationships between different and opposite elements, in accordance with a great consciousness of the historical object to transmit, in the same way the contemporary city must be able to deal with its past. So the architectural project becomes the means to solve the dichotomies between the existing and the contemporary. By identifying "signs in the city" and their reinterpretation, establishing new relationships and meanings, it is possible to resolve the conflict arising from the direct comparison with a complex urban history.
