Italian emigration in the USA. Boundaries of the sources and comparison between Italian and US statistics (1876/1955) The aim of this publication is to focus on the Italian emigration in the USA and to revisit the modifications made in almost a century on the detections of expatriates directed overseas. Taking in account the whole length of time, according to the Italian sources, the emigrants have been five million three hundred thousand, while according to the US authorities they would have been almost 4 million eight hundred thousand. This difference is not homogeneous along time and it could be attributable to both an initial underestimation of the Italian statistics because of the survey problems and a following revaluation in the XXI century, especially between 1901 and 1915. More than a quarter of the total of the Italian emigrates were heading towards the United States of America in that period; however, the US sources show that the percentage of Italian citizens entering the country was on average superior to the 15% of the total of immigrants.
