The essay examines some some editorial strategies, used for the publication of the novels of M. Shaginian's Mess Mend trilogy (1924-1925/35), such as the use of pseudonyms, disguises and cross-dressing. It aims to demonstrate that a line of continuity exists between Modernism and the mass literature of the 1920s. Just as Modernist authors used disguise, whether nominal or real, to construct identities that conformed to their artistic ideal, so too does Shaginian, who modulates her voice on that of a fictitious narrator, the American Jim Dollar, creating the figure of an ideal writer, an expression of the new era.
