In the proto-Augustean period, the new centrality of the myth of the foundation of Rome, both in literature and in the arts, restores Cassandra to a fundamental role. A privileged area of this rethinking, in addition to the glyptics, are some paintings from Pompeii, in prominent domestic rooms, commissioned by high patrons. The prophetess generally appears in a dramatic pose, tormented by conflicting forces and with a dynamic and active role in the scenes depicting traditional epic events, while in some of the representations, she is seen vaticinating as a Latin mantis in the guise of a Sibyl, which demonstrates the Roman culture’s appropriation of this mythological figure.

Abstract
In the proto-Augustean period, the new centrality of the myth of the foundation of Rome, both in literature and in the arts, restores Cassandra to a fundamental role. A privileged area of this rethinking, in addition to the glyptics, are some paintings from Pompeii, in prominent domestic rooms, commissioned by high patrons. The prophetess generally appears in a dramatic pose, tormented by conflicting forces and with a dynamic and active role in the scenes depicting traditional epic events, while in some of the representations, she is seen vaticinating as a Latin mantis in the guise of a Sibyl, which demonstrates the Roman culture’s appropriation of this mythological figure.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
