Archetipi della transizione: il Viaggio al centro della Terra di Jules Verne / Archetypes of Transition: Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth

This article interprets the concept of transition basing on Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. It analyzes its first illustrated edition and investigates the role of representation and graphic language while translating the literary text into images. As we can see this transition from words to images has generated visual archetypes. Many aspects link the novel to the idea of transition. The most obvious is that Édouard Riou, the first illustrator of the story, was able to synthesise graphic suggestions from different epochs and contexts in his illustrations, drawing symbolic representations that strongly influenced the following attempts to translate fantastic creatures and places into images. The described settings, such as the natural tunnels linking the surface and underground, reveal, through the stratification of rocks, the evident signs of geological transition; the underground world, on the other hand, is the realm of evolutionism, as it holds ancestral traces of plants, animals and humans. In Verne’s novel there are also other links with the concept of transition, which this article highlights: decoding the cryptogram meaning; the transitional nature of science; psychological modulations. Indeed, self-awareness only manifests itself after a profound examination of one’s unconscious, confronting the dark part of the soul in an inner journey considered as a metaphor for the transition of the self.

Questo articolo interpreta il concetto di transizione attraverso la rilettura del Viaggio al centro della Terra di Jules Verne e l’analisi critica della sua prima edizione illustrata, indagando il ruolo della rappresentazione e del linguaggio grafico nella traduzione del testo letterario in immagini e nella creazione di archetipi visivi. Molti aspetti legano questo romanzo all’idea di transizione. Il più evidente è che Édouard Riou, primo illustratore del racconto, ha saputo sintetizzare nelle proprie tavole suggestioni grafiche provenienti da epoche e contesti differenti, disegnando rappresentazioni simboliche che hanno fortemente influenzato i molti tentativi successivi di ‘passare‘ in immagini le descrizioni di creature e di luoghi fantastici. Le ambientazioni descritte, come le gallerie naturali di collegamento tra superficie e sottosuolo, rivelano, attraverso la stratificazione delle rocce, i segni evidenti della transizione geologica; il mondo sotterraneo è invece il regno dell’evoluzionismo, poiché serba tracce ancestrali di piante, animali e uomini. Esistono poi altri collegamenti sottintesi con il concetto di transizione, che questo articolo mette in evidenza: dalla decodificazione del significato del crittogramma, alla natura transitoria della scienza, fino alle modulazioni di carattere psicologico. Infatti, la consapevolezza del sé si manifesta solo dopo una profonda disamina del proprio inconscio, affrontando la parte oscura dell’anima in un viaggio interiore inteso come metafora di transizione dell’io.
