According to a founding story famous for the Delphic vaticinium on the anomalous amplexus of male and female transmitted by Diodorus (PW 371), Rhegion arose from the union of some Chalcidians and Messenians as a truly Apollinian colony. The analysis of the response, the other narratives on Rhegion’s mythical past (Strabo’s account, the myths of Iokastos and Orestes), and the speaking names of the oikists point to the local roots of both the response and the oracular tale, which seem to have been developed late in the 5th century BC.

Abstract

According to a founding story famous for the Delphic vaticinium on the anomalous amplexus of male and female transmitted by Diodorus (PW 371), Rhegion arose from the union of some Chalcidians and Messenians as a truly Apollinian colony. The analysis of the response, the other narratives on Rhegion’s mythical past (Strabo’s account, the myths of Iokastos and Orestes), and the speaking names of the oikists point to the local roots of both the response and the oracular tale, which seem to have been developed late in the 5th century BC.
