Among the several energy storage systems, flywheels can be considered a suitable option for power intensive applications that require the release/absorption of high power in a short time duration. In this chapter, starting from the fundamentals, a detailed analysis of the main components and the applications of the flywheel energy storage system is provided, considering both advantages and current limits of this technology. Furthermore, it is presented a description of the main applications in which the use of flywheels has a key role.
