Abstract

Recent debates have emphasized the need for a new policy for attracting labour migrants to the European Union. But if anything, the call for labour migrants is recurrent and this debate repeats itself constantly. During the most recent Global pandemic (or Covid 19 crisis), agricultural workers employed temporarily in United States were not allowed to interrupt their activity as their work was considered vital to life reproduction. This chapter considers Mexican migration to USA under the so-called Programa Bracero (1942-1964), and Italians migrated to West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany) as Gastarbeiter since 1955. The articles adopts a global history approach to grasp the broad picture of workers’ mobility around the world by deconstructing state-centred stories.
