Abstract

Franz Grillparzer, once canonised and taught in schools as a patriotic Austrian author, was first honoured then thrown from his throne, mocked and forgotten. Today he is subject of a new unexpected and lively interest. In particular, his ‘Medea’ is worldwide perceived, as a figure of alterity because of its feminist and postcolonial implications. More generally, Grillparzer's subtle psychological analysis of family, social and political power structures have been recently rediscovered, as well as his ecological reflection and critique of technological progress, which appears in various his works. The author's linguistic scepticism is also considered an element of clear modernity. The ups and downs of the Grilparzerian fortune demonstrate what Ingeborg Bachmann argued with regard to the fortunes of literary works in general: literature does not need a cemetery or a Pantheon and is not concerned with death, ‘it only knows its own very strong intent to influence every present, this present or the near future'. In order to investigate the actuality of this author, repeatedly declared dead and then rediscovered, a conference was held at the University of Perugia on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Grillparzer's death, from which the present volume originates.
