Psychological distress describes the experience of an individual discomforting emotional state in response to a specific stressor, threat or harmful situation. A broad range of events may elicit psychological distress. these events include but are not limited to illness, loss of physical function, victimization, social conflict and economic insecurity. Irrespective of the severity, psychological distress may contribute toe to the development of a range of physical and mental health disorders in those who are vulnerable, leading to significant public health concerns.
